Q: Who maintains this blog?
A: This blog is maintained by Brian Want, College Adviser at the University of Chicago.
Q: For whom is the content intended?
A: I write this blog for my advisees in the College. U of C undergraduates who are not my advisees may find some of the information helpful, but they should always consult with their official advisers when they have questions.
Q: Will this replace official emails from Brian or other administrators in the Dean of Students Office?
A: No. My advisees will continue to receive standard “mass email” notifications about required conferences, registration, and other topics. This blog is intended as a (very useful) supplement.
Q: Why did you create this blog?
A: As an adviser, I encounter a lot of information — news, events, articles, links to resources — that I want to share with students. However, sending out near-daily emails is not the most efficient method of dissemination, especially for items that may only be of interest to a few students. Think of Please Be Advised as a bulletin board that you can scan for posts relevant to you. For instance, if something is of particular interest to first-year students, I’ll tag (categorize) it with the label “1Y.” If it is relevant to Economics majors, I’ll tag it “Econ.” And so on.
Q: Why can’t I comment on posts?
A: Comments have been turned off for this blog. Unfortunately, it is not feasible for me to keep up with and respond to comments. Please email me directly if you have a question or concern.
